On Tuesday, September 26, 2017, Afghan Ambassador to the United States visited Capitol Hill to meet with Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Congressman Ted Poe of Texas.
In Ambassador Mohib’s meeting with Senator Blumenthal, the two discussed the current situation in Afghanistan after the announcement of President Trump’s new strategy for the country and the region. Ambassador Mohib discussed hopes for future engagement with American and international businesses as well as government and private institutions to attract more investment as job creation and expanded opportunities, coupled with security, will lead to prosperity and stability. He also thanked Senator Blumenthal and highlighted the importance of bipartisan support for Afghanistan. The Democrat Senator from Connecticut said use of military has to be part of the solution to the war in Afghanistan in addition to diplomatic, political and economic efforts.
Ambassador Mohib also met with Congressman Ted Poe in which challenges and opportunities in the wake of the new US policy for Afghanistan and the region were discussed. Ambassador Mohib said the new policy has changed regional dynamics and has already established a new sense of optimism among Afghans who want to build a better and safer future for their children. He added that Afghans are hopeful that policy’s clarity will further help fight the menace of terrorism without any distinction.
Representative Poe said he will continue to be a strong voice against terrorism and to highlight the role every country in the region must play.
